Ha. That's fabulous. How was your costume, by the way? Sorry. I kinda had school. And stuff. Damn high school. But yeah. Is college much harder than high school? It seems like it would be, but maybe it's not. I dunno.
I wore my Diego costume to a football game on saturday (we always have a day where we invite the high schools in the area to come play in the stands with us and do a halftime show and we all wear halloween costumes haha) and it went really well. Unfortunately, I’m pretty much stuck studying today so I’m not gonna get to wear my other one :P
In some ways, college is pretty hard but it definitely is a relief once you get there from high school. You don’t have your classes consecutively after each other (unless you choose them that way), there’s SO much more freedom, you don’t have to wake up before the sun is up to get ready for class (unless you pick early classes lol), and you’re actually treated like an adult. But that does bring challenges: since they treat you like an adult, you want to behave like one (essentially just be responsible and stuff). In high school, I was able to BS my way through SO many things, even my senior project haha. In college that doesn’t work so well usually, most professors make their assignments BS-proof lol. You also get the chance to study what you want, even if you have to take general ed. courses. Like, I’m supposed to have a history/geography credit or something so I’m taking Musics of the World which counts, and I love that class :D The work load depends on how many hours you take, but as long as you set time aside to work/study, it’s easier than high school most of the time. The main/best advice that I can really give is one that everyone says: GO TO CLASS haha. Seriously, so many think to themselves “Well I can miss one class, I’m pretty tired today” and eventually they keep doing that and it seriously hurts their grade. But I guess that kind of gives more motivation to work hard in classes, especially if you’re on scholarships (like I am). I lost one last semester and my school is still paid for, but my refund check is a lot smaller..and that was the money I use to pay for drum corps :P
Welp. I'm pretty good, aha. I, too, am procrastinating. I was supposed to make up my own version of hell, like Dante's Inferno. You know. Yeah. But I've just been watching ridiculous soap operas and cutting out triangles for my hipster costume tomorrow, trolololol.
haha nice! I unfortunately have a test tuesday so i’ll probably be studying most of the day :P BUT I will find a way to wear my costume (formerly Go Diego Go, now a chippendale lol) tomorrow—except wear it to class haha.
Glad you approve! I'm still working on becoming a "true musician," to be honest, but I feel like I'm on my way. Given time, I'll get there. The fact that you don't look like a starving Ugandan child right now is probably for the best, wouldn't you say? It seems like that would draw out more pity than it would enthusiasm for your memes and such.
Indeed. Most people when they get back from tour try to keep exercising to keep their bodies (which unfortunately rarely works completely, since you’re not working 14 hours a day anymore) but I pigged out when I got home haha. I’ve gained all my pre-tour weight back (all 6 lbs :P) and that doesn’t bother me at all.
Okay, so maybe I'm not a COMPLETE troll. It's more like 45% troll and 55% fangirl. Even if you do look like a starving Ugandan child during tour and I am but a lowly woodwind player.
Hahaha well I was a woodwind player (I guess I technically am still) and you certainly aren’t lowly, true musicians are never “lowly” lol. As for the starving Ugandan thing, I definitely don’t look like that currently haha :P
Thanks for the answer! I'm just worried about not being able to do very well in school or drum corps interfering with classes and college marching band. I was thinking of auditioning in a couple years when I'm 19 and not too busy worrying about college auditions. Did drum corps give you conflicts in schedule?
Not too many, I know of a few people who it did though so maybe I was lucky. I decided to audition a year after I graduated high school so that I could take care of all my college stuff (registering for classes, orientation, etc) in the summer w/o worrying about anything else. That was my decision but I know plenty of people who march after they graduate and manage fine. The only issue that can come to my mind is if you have a concert the weekend of a camp. Most corps will understand and suggest you attend the concert; if you can, you can try to come to the camp afterwards, or if not then you may have to miss that camp.
I have a bit of a lengthy question. I've been thinking of joining drum corps... but I have two problems. I'm female, and I'm going to be attending college for Music Education (for Bands). Is there any possible way to balance college and corps, and if so what corps would you suggest that allow women?
Hi! Well…being a female isn’t an issue at all, unless you were hoping to audition for Madison Scouts or Cavaliers…in that case you could try to pull a Mulan, but I don’t think that would work well in drum corps :/ But besides those two, you can audition for any corps.
For your second question, I too am studying music education in college to be a band director. It’s tricky at first to balance the two, but it most definitely can be done. A lot of the men and women who march drum corps are music education/performance majors. The main issues that I’ve dealt with regarding the two are the weekend camps and it takes away any summer plans you had besides marching. The weekend camps aren’t really bad, it just means you only have a limited amount of time to study/do homework that may be do on the next monday. With the summer, I was aware that there were a lot of jobs I could have taken working with high school band camps but was unable to because I got home from tour after they were done, kind of a minor inconvenience but not too bad. In addition, drum corps experience definitely puts you ahead of those who haven’t marched in applying for a tech job in a high school band, or later down the road when you’re applying as the band director at a school :D Hope that helps, feel free to ask me any more questions you may have!
i wanna get in on this geometric shaped love. loloool jk i just want to meet you at a competition if i make it into tealsound auditions are november, im so excited!
That’d be awesome!!! And chances are SOA will have quite a few competitions with Teal Sound next summer. We did this year at least, I remember seeing them a lot. So in that case we will definitely have to meet!!
There seems to be a common misconception that Vanguard's uniform pants are green, but they are not, and I'm not quite sure why so many people think that they are. They are black, and while your "Vangardevoir" was quite clever and artistic, there is a major fault in the color scheme :C
They look pretty green to me…
very dark green, but green nonetheless..
In the past, Vanguard has had black uniform pants, I know that (they make subtle changes to the uniforms a lot).
They look considerably darker here but it could just be the lighting. Or maybe my eyes are broken lol.
