Hey guys! My name is Xavier, and I need some help from the wonderful Tumblr community.
I have recently been privileged enough to be contracted to march with Forte Drum and Bugle Corps based out of Dallas, Texas. I will be touring under Drum Corps International (DCI) all summer, competing all across the country.
Marching this summer through DCI is a unique experience only experienced by a select group every year. It is an experience that will allow me to expand my musical horizon; however, it is a huge requirement both time-wise and financially.
Ultimately, it will cost me roughly $2500 just for my base corps fees. Even then, this does not include flights to camps before tour or general expenses for these camps. Basically, I really need help to try and meet these monetary obligations because, without any help, it’s going to be near impossible to raise this money. I am graciously accepting donations or sponsorships of any amount as every dollar will help.
You can donate to my Paypal through the obnoxiously large button on my Tumblr:
How much experience do you need on your instrument to march for a world class corps? I currently play clarinet for my hs marching band, but unfortunately for a number of reasons there is no possible way for me to learn a brass instrument until I graduate, so I'm going to try to learn one in college, just wondering how long I should play before auditioning? Thanks!
Hi! Before my audition, I had been playing mellophone for about 6 or 7 months, but there were people I marched with who had been playing for less than that before their auditions. It really depends on where you audition and what you audition on. Some corps, top 6 I’d say, may take into account your experience on an instrument more so than others. Also, some spots may be more competitive than others if more people are auditioning on that instrument.
I didn’t start learning brass until I got to college as well (well, the summer after graduation), but I’d say at least 3 or 4 months of experience is safe before your audition. That’d probably be like the bare minimum, assuming you practice your butt off, obviously more than that is better depending on where you plan to audition. But I hope this helps, feel free to message me if you have more questions!
Nope..honestly, I didn’t know any significant DCI people (aside from George Hopkins and I guess Koji Mori) until I found all the band tumblr people haha. Before then, I had no clue who Dean Patterson or Brandon Cave or whoever were….and I probably could’ve gone without seeing the creepy things people say about them :P
